cabinets in Broken Arrow are a little bit emptier after a prescription drop
off this Saturday. Police hope it will keep the community a little safer. After
sitting for months or even years in medicine cabinets, these pills are now being
destroyed in an effort to keep them from getting into the wrong hands.
"If you're addicted to it, you're going to figure out who has it and how
to get them," said Lisa Ford with the Broken Arrow Police Department. Prescription
drugs are the leading cause of drug overdose deaths in Oklahoma. On Saturday
the Broken Arrow Police Department did its part to fight the problem. "It
is a big business. It's a big business for people who sell it, and it's definitely
a big business for people that need it," Ford said. Break-ins at pharmacies
are on the rise in the Tulsa area. "We do see a lot of robberies of pharmacies,
because you know, this is pretty hot on the street," Ford said. "Just
what we've collected so far in a couple hours, is over $10,000 street value."
Jim Robertson cleaned out his medicine cabinet and brought his old prescriptions
to the drop off. "We want to get rid of them. We don't want someone breaking
in and going for drugs," he said.
